How Can I Tell If My Home Has A Mold Problem?

Mold can cause a lot more harm on the human body then people think it does, and whether they know it it not, millions of people are exposed to mold every single day. Not only does it harm your body, but it also harms your home by weakening the walls, ceilings, and floors.

Musty Odor

Just because you can’t see mold, doesn’t mean that it’s not there. If there is a persistent musty/earthy smell, it’s an strong indication that you have mold in your home. Mold can grow behind walls and wallpaper, and not be visible to the naked eye.

Allergy Symptoms

Do your allergy symptoms get better when you leave your home? If your symptoms seem to worsen when you’re in your house, it most likely means that there is mold hidden somewhere. Many of these symptoms include:

  • Nasal & sinus congestion
  • Persistent cough
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Eye irritation
  • Upper respiratory infection

If you have any of these symptoms, and they worsen when you’re home, it is a good idea to have a mold inspection.

Visual Indicators

An obvious sign that you have mold is if you can see it. However, many people who have mold, think that it’s just dirt or soot. The smallest of mold patches can grow and spread very quickly. If you find mold in your home, it also means that you have the right conditions for it to grow in several other places. Mold can appear in various colors such as black, white, gray, green, gray, or brown, and often have a dirt like appearance.

Water Indicators

If your home has ever had problems with moisture, you can almost be certain that there is mold growing somewhere in your home. If the walls, ceilings, or floors are discolored or have any water stains, it could mean that there are colonies of mold growing behind or within these materials.

If you notice any signs of condensation within your home, it means that there is a lot of moisture; which is a strong indication that there is mold growing somewhere. Mold grows and feeds off of moisture and water. If you have ever had a water leak in your home, it is very possible that there is mold growing, most likely where the leak originated.
